Head of Upper School

Purpose: 

The Head of the Upper School represents and promotes ESD’s mission as it relates to the faculty, staff, students, and families in the Upper School through leadership and management of all areas involving education and student life as an instructional leader.  The Head of Upper School reports to the Head of School and is a member of the leadership team.



Qualifications & Skills:

  

  • A graduate degree and a minimum of 5 years of experience in educational and instructional leadership

  • Demonstrated positive interpersonal skills and ability to communicate clearly and effectively with various constituencies of a school

  • Experience in and ability to supervise and evaluate teachers and administrators at different levels within the school community

  • Demonstrated experience meeting the social and emotional needs of high school students

  • Technologically literate regarding communication and database systems, as well as social media; knowledgeable regarding educational uses of technology

  • Strong managerial and organizational skills 

  • Willingness to be a visible presence at the school in all venues where the students and faculty are actively engaged 

  

Essential Functions:

 

To serve as academic leader of the Upper School. 

  • Serves as the educational and instructional leader of the Upper School, modeling passion and enthusiasm for educating Upper School aged children, while creating a positive atmosphere beneficial to the teaching and learning process. 

  • Direct the activities of the division’s instructional and, in conjunction with other executive leaders, the non-instructional staff in the performance of their duties. 

  • Function as the chief articulator of the division’s programs, expectations, behavioral guidelines, and other information necessary to ensure that all constituencies are fully informed.

  • Be knowledgeable and able to articulate advances and trends in pedagogy and education.

  • Lead oversight and development of academic policies in the articulation of the school mission, school goals, department goals. course objectives, materials, methods, and means of assessment.

  • Be aware of the educational, physical, social, and psychological needs of the upper school community, and develop plans for meeting those needs.

  • Establish programs for the in-service training of teachers and for evaluation and professional growth.

  • Oversee decisions and activities of College Guidance

To facilitate, advise, and supervise Upper School student life and student wellness
To participate and/or lead leadership meetings at all levels.
