Assistant Head of Upper School

St. Mark's School of Texas is seeking an experienced educator to serve as the Assistant Head of Upper School beginning in the 2017-2018 school year. The Assistant Head of Upper School reports directly to the Head of Upper School and is responsible for maintaining a vibrant student life program throughout Upper School. Primary responsibilities include overseeing student conduct, leading the Advisory program, supporting co-curricular student programs, and working with faculty on student life matters and other school-wide initiatives.

 

The Assistant Head of Upper School supports the Head of Upper School to create an environment that nurtures the healthy development of students, fosters a collaborative approach with faculty, and advances school-wide initiatives in support of the St. Mark’s mission. To fulfill the role, the Assistant Head of Upper School is a regular presence among the students and a point of contact for families and faculty regarding student life. In absence of the Head of Upper School, the Assistant Head of Upper School will manage daily operations.

 

At St. Mark’s, we are deeply committed to character and leadership education for all boys and have developed a program that spans grades one through twelve. Successful candidates will have interest in making contributions to this aspect of our program and will place equal priority on the character and intellectual development of our students.

 

Responsibilities:

  • Oversee Advisory program

  • Educate and train Advisors

  • Manage disciplinary program and enforcement of Lion Tracks expectations. Oversee student conduct and the enforcement of school rules. Support programming that strengthens student commitment to the Honor Code, fostering a culture of integrity in Upper School. 

  • Partner with other school personnel to ensure student safety and well-being during the school day and at school functions.

  • Manage the logistics and preparations for school-sponsored social events.

  • Monitor daily attendance and work closely with the Administrative Assistant to the Assistant Head of Upper School to reconcile discrepancies.

  • Oversee Student Life programming in coordination with Division Head, Class Sponsors, and Counseling staff.

  • Collaborate with the Head of Upper School to support the work of the Class Sponsors.

  • Work closely with the Head of Upper School in conjunction with the Upper School Counselor, the Class Sponsors, and the Advisors to monitor and support student social and emotional health.

  • Work in support of the Head of Upper School to coordinate end of year awards processes.

  • Serve on the Administrative Leadership Team

  • Upper School Advisor

  • Teach one section in area of expertise.

Experience / Qualifications & Skills

  • A minimum of 8-10 years of teaching experience or relevant experience in schools

  • A Bachelor’s Degree is required; a Masters Degree is preferred

  • A collaborative approach to leadership that leads to effective decision making; genuine enthusiasm for working with colleagues, sharing strategies, and exploring effective ways to enhance the student experience

  • Highly organized and strong communication skills

  • A passion for teaching and learning, and finds joy working with adolescent boys

Founded in 1906, St. Mark’s School of Texas is a non-sectarian, college-preparatory, independent day school serving approximately 850 boys in grades one through twelve. The School has 17 endowed faculty positions and fosters an 8-1 student/faculty ratio with an average class size of 15.
