Tower Hill School - Wilmington, DE
Tower Hill School is an independent day school in Wilmington, Delaware serving students from pre-school through grade 12. The school has a rigorous college preparatory program, a rich program in music and the arts, a broad extra-curricular program, and a competitive athletic program. The Athletic program is certainly a pride point for the school, both for its success and the school's deep commitment to a well rounded experience and the life lessons one learns through teamwork, winning, losing, hard work, and dedication. Since its inception nearly a hundred years ago, Tower Hill has had a deep commitment to a robust athletic program, in which all students from grade seven through twelve are required to be engaged. Tower Hill is seeking an Athletic Director to lead this program at a most exciting time for the school, as it prepares for its Centennial in 2019.
The Athletic Director at Tower Hill School is a member of the senior administrative, working closely with the Lower, Middle, and Upper School Division Heads, the Admission Office, the Director of Physical Education. Reporting directly to the Head of School, the Athletic Director is responsible for all aspects of the department including hiring, scheduling, supervision of the athletic facilities and transportation. The Athletic Director also represents Tower Hill at the local and state level within the DIAA.
The next Athletic Director must have the right tone and touch with all constituencies including parents, students, colleagues, coaches, neighbors, the maintenance department, and many other individuals. It will be important for the next director to leverage the right balance by maintaining participation in teams, positioning the program for competitive success, while also thinking creatively as to what is best for students and the overall goals of the school. The school is engaged in a Strategic Plan that will likely emphasize the need to enhance and modernize systems within the school, including athletic updates on the website and TowerNet. The next athletic director will need to strive for the right balance of flexibility and structure, as well as having an approachable presence for students, coaches, and parents. Most importantly, the next director needs to ensure that while students are challenged and stretched in their practices and by their coaches, that there is an overall love of the sport that is fostered through positive encouragement and support. This quality and mindset will be paramount in the evaluation of coaches on an annual basis.
The successful candidate will have a minimum of a bachelor’s degree and at least five plus years of previous experience in coaching and athletic administration. Additionally, the school is looking for a candidate who will partner with the Head of School to ensure a healthy balance that ensures success and that helps the school to develop, a vision for the future building on its already strong foundation.
Deadline for submission: January 27, 2017.
